So today I'm going to show you how drinking alcohol affects our gains according to new research.

So today I go through the following topics to show you some valuable information about drinking alcohol and gains based on new research.

  • Does drinking alcohol affect testosterone levels?
  • Other effects of drinking alcohol.
  • How to minimize the effects of drinking alcohol.

What actually happens when we drink alcohol?

When you drink alcohol, it is going to absorb in your bloodstream and then make a beeline straight to the liver In fact your body handles it metabolically quite similar to how it treats poison. It means that the metabolism of all the other nutrients you have eaten is going to be put on the back burner until the alcohol is eliminated. And since there's no store for alcohol in the body, as long as alcohol is in your system, all carbs and fats are preferentially shuttled toward storage. This is the case for dietary fat where we see that fat oxidation or burning is severely blunted following alcohol consumption and I think this is where the whole idea that alcohol is making you fat is coming from. It's important to clarify that alcohol itself isn't making you fat directly but the other excess calories are more readily stored as fat when alcohol is present.

So the main reason drinking alcohol is bad for us is a large amount of calorie intake. There are seven calories per gram. But it's still no harm to you if you are drinking moderately. If you are a person who gets 2-3 glasses of beer once a week or you drink a wine glass in the evening three times it's not going to harm you when it comes to fat loss. And still, if you drink alcohol and measure your daily calorie intake and keep it in the safe zone, it's not going to harm your fat loss program. When alcohol is consumed in moderation isn't likely to halt fat loss or muscle-building progress as long as caloric intake is kept constant.

So the most important thing thing that you should care about is post-drinking food binges. It's a  very dangerous habit that many people can lose. When you are drunk you will have low willpower to stop food binges. So I suggest eating fewer calories early in the day that you are going to drink. This will reduce the calorie intake of your drinking day. So it's very important to eat lower fat on drinking days.

Does drinking alcohol affect testosterone levels?

Testosterone is a key hormone when gaining muscles. It's very

important to have a good amount of this hormone balanced in our

body if we want to build muscles and be strong. So it's very important

to find out that does drinking alcohol affects our testosterone levels.

Again if you drink alcohol in moderation that's not going to affect your

testosterone levels at all. Actually, a  recent study has found that light

drinking in the range of 2-3 standard drinks has been shown to boost

testosterone levels by 17% in men. This may explain increases in libido

often seen with light alcohol consumption but isn't likely to affect

muscle anabolism. If you increase the dose of alcohol testosterone

levels starts to start to steeply decline. One study that drew blood

samples from drunken emergency room visitors found 45% lower

testosterone levels in drunken men compared to controls. But drinking

alcohol doesn't affect testosterone levels in women. The study

suggests that this is likely due to alcohol inhibitory effect on testicular

testosterone. Testosterone is a very powerful anabolic hormone. So

it's very important to keep testosterone levels as high as possible from

a muscle-building perspective.

Other effects of drinking alcohol.

Drinking alcohol can affect protein synthesis. But what does science have to say about alcohol and muscle growth directly? The general trend of research seems to indicate that rates of muscle protein synthesis are suppressed by alcohol consumption. This is especially true in the post-workout period. Well a lot of this research has been done on rodents now they are all showing the same general trend and one study from 2014 shows that heavy alcohol consumption like 8-9 drinks during post-workout reduced muscle protein synthesis by 37% even when protein was consumed in amounts shown to be optimally effective the intake of alcohol still reduced muscle protein synthesis by 24% indicating that even protein some of most anabolic stuff we have cant fully rescue the antianabolic effects of alcohol. But studies show that drinking after training is less effective for women. So if you are a woman you probably have much less to worry about drinking alcohol after training from a muscle-building perspective.

Are there other reasons that drinking alcohol can affect your gains? There is a big reason drinking alcohol can affect your gains. If you drink alcohol you will suffer from dehydration, hangover, and interrupted sleep. So if you go to the gym the day after the night which you drank, your performance can be affected if you drank excessively the previous night. And sleep is very important for muscle building. You know that muscles build when you sleep. So it's very important to get a good night's sleep without interactions. But if drink excessively at the night it can affect your sleep also. And because of dehydration, you will experience fatigue, and headaches during next day. This can affect your performance in a very bad way and it can slow down your results.

How to minimize the effects of drinking alcohol.

So how you can still be good at your performances even when you drink alcohol.

  • You can consume alcohol in moderation. Alcohol consumed in moderation isn't likely to halt fat loss or muscle-building progress as long as caloric intake is kept constant.
  • Eat lower-fat on drinking days.
  • Avoid post-drinking food binges.
  • Plan a scheduled rest day the day after drinking and focus on rehydration.

So again if you drink moderately like 2-3 glasses of beer or a glass of wine in the evening three times a week is not going to affect your gains if your calorie intake is constant. It's going to affect your performance and results if you drink excessively. So you have to choose what's important for you.
